She started her career as Candidate Attorney at Pretoria law firm then known as Gildenhuys Van der Merwe in September 1999.  After her admission as attorney on 3 August 2000 she joined the firm’s litigation department as Associate, where she spent her first eight years of practice defending liability claims against the firm’s major clients such as Santam, Mutual & Federal (now Old Mutual Insure) and the Road Accident Fund.  It was during this time that she gained specialised knowledge and insight into the world of liability litigation.  Having come through the proverbial ranks, she was appointed as Director in January 2007.  In the years that followed, Nicolette continued to extend and deepen her skills set for a further 12 years, during which time she held the position as the operations Director of the firm, spent a number of years practicing in the firm’s commercial litigation and public law department, and then re-joined the firm’s personal injury- and general litigation department, acting mainly on behalf of Plaintiff clients in liability matters.

In February 2020 Nicolette joined Gert Nel Inc. attorneys, where she further honed her skills, especially when it comes to dealing with high volumes of matters, and correspondent referral instructions from all over the Republic of South Africa.

In a move that would allow her to focus more on the practice of liability law, and her fervent passion for client care and service excellence, Nicolette founded DWM Attorneys along with seasoned liability law attorney Adél van der Merwe in 2022.
